Email List Segmenting Introduction

In the world of marketing, segmentation is the practice of dividing a large group into smaller groups. A good example of this is grocery stores. If you go to a store like Whole Foods Market, you’ll notice that it’s divided into sections for different types of food items—such as produce, seafood, and bakery—to help you find what you’re looking for faster. Email segmentation works in much the same way: By dividing your email list into smaller groups based on their interests or demographics, you can tailor your message more effectively and have better engagement with your audience.

Apply The 4Ps To Your Email List

You can apply the 4Ps to your email list in order to help you segment it better.

Let’s say you have an email list of 100 people who bought a book on how to start a blog from your website. You want them to buy another book from Amazon but they haven’t yet done so because they don’t know about it yet! In this case, “product” refers to both books (if there was only one book then I would call it a service).

Segment by interest

You can use a tool like Aweber to segment your email list by interest. The first step is to figure out what interests your audience has, which you do by looking at the 4Ps: products, pricing and promotions, people and places, and promotion timing (seasonal or timely).

Here are some examples of things you might segment by:

Product – pet owners vs non-pet owners; men’s clothing vs women’s clothing; skincare products for oily skin vs dry skin; etc.

Pricing – free trial users vs paid users; monthly plan subscribers vs annual plan subscribers; B2B customers vs B2C customers; etc.

Segment by Persona

A persona is a fictional character that represents your ideal customer. Personas help you to understand your customers better and set goals for your business. They also determine what content you create, how much time to spend on it, and where to focus marketing efforts.

It’s important to segment your email list so you can have better engagement with your audience.

You can segment your list in many different ways. Here are some examples:
